ElvisFind Review

For the average fan, the huge amount of books and publications about Elvis Presley is hard to keep up with. And having to browse through thousands, to find the ones actually worth reading, doesn't sound very appealing.

Luckily there are several websites that can help us out here. Most fan clubs announce and review new books in their fan club magazines and website. And there are specialty websites by independent fans, such as Rien van Houten. This Dutch Elvis fan has spent a considerable amount of time - since 2002 - to create a large digital Elvis bookshelf, titled "Elvis Presley: A Life In Books".

This website lists over twenty-five hundred books and publications. For most, you can view the book cover, the author, the publishing year, the number of pages and book dimensions.
All information is presented in different lists, sorted on the title, author, year or publisher. There is also a list of all publications coming this year. And for a number of authors, some background information is available.

When reviewing and scoring Elvis Presley websites I try to focus on two things:

  1. Relevance. I look at how relevant, interesting and up-to-date the website's content is;
  2. Usability. I test how well the website can be used by all sorts of people and on mobile devices.

Here are my thoughts on these criteria on "A Life In Books".

Relevance of content

If you are looking for information about Elvis books, this site won't let you down. Yes, there are more websites about Elvis books. But "A Life In Books" is larger and more up to date than many others. After 17 years, this website is still updated on a regular basis.
The webmaster made a decision not to review books. A choice I understand, given the amount of time and money this would take. However, I do feel some sort of review system would increase the value of the information.
Our score for relevance: 4 out of 5

A Life in Books has a black background with a calm mix of white text, orange headers, and yellow links. The colors are used in a consistent way, making navigation a breeze. There's limited use of images. This is a good way to focus on the content. The lists are presented with plenty of sorting options and categories.
Unfortunately, on devices smaller than a normal tablet, the structure of the site elements and the small font makes the site a little hard to read.
I also think "A Life In Books" would benefit from a search option.

All in all, A Life In Books is a pleasing website. You'll find what you are looking for without too many problems, and pretty quick too. There are some minor suggestions for an even better experience.
Our score for usability: 3 out of 5

Final review score: 7 stars (out of 10)
